Description The breeding island is located in open water, and stability is crucial, just like it needs to remain 'dry' and rise sufficiently above the water level. They share common characteristics: Not flooded, 30cm water level Substrate of rolled pebbles with specific size (origin Meuse, Rhine, English and French North Sea coast) and shell sand (North Sea) in which they can nest Protection/hiding place low near the ground and shade (max. knee-high) that can be ensured for the chicks using terracotta ridge tiles and half grès or concrete pipes Protected from predators (fox, rat) that can reach the island over water. This is achieved by fencing off the water side with large-mesh wire mesh (transparent) with a height of 50cm. Provided with a ramp on the side for young birds that venture onto the water. To increase attractiveness, the island can be equipped with decoy birds, which have proven to strongly promote colony development in practice. The substrate is carefully composed and fully tailored to the specific needs of spoonbills, allowing them to build their nests in ideal conditions. The island is manufactured from high-quality, durable materials, making it not only a robust but also a long-lasting solution.
